You Are Not the Body — Nisargadatta Maharaj’s Radical Clarity
Nisargadatta Maharaj spoke with fire and precision. He didn’t entertain mental gymnastics. His core teaching:
“You are not the body. You are the limitless awareness in which the body appears.”
The idea that “I am the body” is the root illusion. From it springs every form of suffering — fear, desire, attachment. But awareness… is untouched.
He said:
“The body appears in your consciousness. It is there because you believe in it. Question this belief.”
Ask yourself: Was I aware of my body while deep asleep? No. Yet, I existed.
So what am I?
That which knows waking, dream, and sleep
That which observes thought and sensation —
That unchanging witness — is You.
“Understand that nothing perceivable, or conceivable, is you. You are the perceiving.”
Stay with that. Not as a thought — but as a direct recognition.
You are not what you see.
You are that by which seeing happens.
