Who Am I? — The First Step to Self-Knowledge

The question “Who am I?” may seem simple, but it holds the key to liberation.

We often say, “I am a teacher,” or “I am tired,” or “I am happy.” But pause… is that who you really are? Are you the body? The thoughts? The emotions? These all change. But you, the one who is aware of them — do you change?

Ramana Maharshi said:

“The ‘I’-thought is the root of all other thoughts. Find out where this ‘I’ arises from and the mind will dissolve.”

Close your eyes for a moment and ask, “Who am I?”
Don’t try to answer it mentally — just observe what remains when all thoughts are let go.
That silent presence… that awareness… that is You.

In Advaita Vedanta, Self-inquiry (Atma Vichara) is not just a technique — it is a direct path to realizing your true nature as pure awareness, untouched by the world.

Stay with this question throughout the day.
Not with effort, but with quiet curiosity.
