Realizing the Atman through a Silent Mind

In the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the realization of the Self—or Atman—is a deeply inward journey. He explains that this realization comes when the mind becomes mruta manas, or a “dead mind.” But what does that mean?

A dead mind is not a lifeless or inactive one. Rather, it is a mind free from thoughts, desires and outward distractions. It is turned inward, silent and still. In this state of pure awareness, the mind ceases to chase external objects and instead sees its own source.

When the mind becomes entirely still and looks within, it dissolves into the very essence it was seeking. That essence is the Atman—our true Self. According to Sri Ramana Maharshi, in that moment, the mind does not just witness the Self—it becomes That.

This simple yet profound path of inner stillness remains one of the core principles of his teachings: be still, turn inward and know who you truly are.
