Measuring a Man by His Light, Not His Shadows

In the words of Swami Vivekananda, "No man should be judged by his defects. The great virtues a man has are his especially, his errors are the common weaknesses of humanity and should never be counted in estimating his character."

This profound thought urges us to shift our lens when we look at others — and ourselves. We are so often quick to define people by their flaws, forgetting that imperfections are universal. Mistakes are not anomalies; they are part of the human condition. But the virtues — the courage, kindness, integrity or resilience — these are what make each individual unique and worthy of admiration.

When we judge a person, let it not be by the moments they faltered, but by the strength they showed, the goodness they offered and the light they brought into the world. After all, character is not built on the absence of error, but on the presence of virtue.

Let’s remember this in our relationships, in society and most importantly, in the mirror.
